Environmental Air Monitoring

Ambient air monitoring serves two purposes that need different instruments. Gravimetric sampling by filter weighing sets the reference a network must be traceable to. Real-time optical measurement gives the temporal resolution and coverage that networks, urban projects and industrial perimeters depend on operationally. Most serious errors come from specifying one and expecting the other.

What this family covers

Continuous PM and gas monitors, low-flow and high-volume gravimetric samplers, multi-channel samplers, ozone and DOAS analyzers, automatic noise monitoring with the required statistical descriptors, weather stations, handheld field units and an UAV platform for area survey.

Applications

Municipal air quality networks · urban background and traffic stations · industrial perimeter monitoring · construction dust enforcement · indoor air quality · occupational dust exposure · research institutions · airport and port environmental monitoring

How to specify

Decide first whether the work is regulatory or operational. If a reading will ever be disputed, gravimetric reference data has to exist behind it — the 2031 high-volume sampler is the instrument that provides it. If the work is screening, trending or operational, optical alone may be sufficient and considerably cheaper per point.

Frequently asked questions

Should I specify optical or gravimetric PM measurement?

Gravimetric filter weighing remains the reference method against which optical instruments are evaluated. Optical monitors give continuous data, a much lower cost per point and the temporal resolution networks need, but they report an equivalent concentration that must be correlated with the reference. If your work is regulatory and defensible you need gravimetric data behind the optical data. If it is operational, optical alone may suffice.

What data quality indicators matter when comparing monitors?

Three. Correlation with the reference method against the stated requirement. Agreement of the measurement range with the reference. And data completeness as a percentage of expected samples. A monitor that states these three can be compared objectively; one that publishes only a range figure cannot.

Can these instruments feed a municipal air quality network?

The 2092 supports the HJ/T 212-2017 data transmission protocol and is used with HJ 633-2012 AQI calculation and HJ 663-2013 assessment. The 2193 noise monitor also supports HJ 212-2017 and HJ 660-2013. Where your network uses a different protocol, state it in the enquiry — most models can be configured.

Does a monitoring station need noise measurement as well?

A station measuring air but not noise will receive complaints it cannot answer, because noise and air quality are assessed together under the environmental quality framework. The 2193 speaks the same HJ 212 protocol as the air monitors, so it fits the same network rather than being a separate system.
