Calibration and Reference Instruments for Testing Laboratories
Overview
A laboratory that cannot demonstrate traceability cannot issue a report a regulator will accept, and cannot satisfy ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. The instruments that make measurement chains verifiable are therefore not laboratory accessories — they are the basis of the laboratory’s commercial existence.
The compliance picture
Emissions are assessed against a named method, not against a concentration in isolation. The table below lists the parameters this sector is regulated on, the methods that apply, and what each method actually determines.

Common challenges in this sector
The problems below come up repeatedly in enquiries from this sector. They are engineering constraints, not sales objections, and the right answer is to specify around them rather than discover them on site.
A calibration certificate from an untraceable source breaks the whole chain
Your accredited test body needs traceability to national standards through documented, repeatable verification. A certificate from a source that cannot itself be traced invalidates results that were otherwise correctly measured — and the retro-active scope of that invalidation is the painful part. This is why we state the reference standard used and the acceptance tolerance on every calibration record.
A laboratory rarely needs the largest instrument, and over-specifying is expensive
A 5000 L/min calibrator in a lab that runs 24 L/min samplers ties up capital. Match the instrument to the highest flow you actually verify, not to the highest flow that exists. The 8040 spans micro flow to 5000 L/min in one chassis precisely so a single unit can cover a mixed instrument fleet.
Gravimetric work is impossible without controlled weighing
PM reference determinations require filter conditioning at constant temperature and humidity before and after weighing. Without a controlled weighing system, the balance readings are not traceable and the gravimetric result inherits that uncertainty. The 8061B with a Sartorius balance is the configuration most reference laboratories need.
Odorimetry is the one measurement that needs a trained panel
Odour concentration is determined by sensory response, not by an instrument reading, and an olfactometer without a trained, rested panel produces a number that will not survive challenge. Specify the 8032 for dilution and delivery control, and budget separately for panel training.
Documents to have ready
Having the applicable documents in hand before the enquiry shortens the quotation cycle and avoids specifying an instrument against the wrong method. These are the references most frequently requested in this sector.
