Volatile Organic Compound Monitoring

Volatile organic compounds are among the most stringently regulated pollutants, and measurement differs substantially by application. Ambient capture, stack sampling, leak screening and fuel vapour recovery each use a different sampling medium, flow rate and analysis principle — and using the wrong one produces a number the client cannot use.

What this family covers

Sorbent tube and solution absorption samplers for ambient VOC, canister and bag samplers for exhaust gas, total hydrocarbon and methane analyzers by FID, portable detectors combining FID and PID, non-contact gas leak imaging, and duct flow measurement for vapour recovery balance.

Applications

Petrochemical and chemical plants · fuel terminals and tank farms · petroleum loading terminals · industrial coating and printing · solvent recovery · LDAR programmes · waste incineration · landfill and wastewater

How to specify

PID and FID are not interchangeable, and choosing between them wrongly is the most common error in a VOC enquiry. A PID responds to a wide range of VOCs at low concentration and is the LDAR working tool. A FID gives total hydrocarbon response and is the reference method for regulatory application. State which task the instrument is for.

Every model on this page is photographed and available. Specifications are taken from the 2025 product catalog and should still be confirmed against the factory datasheet before a contract is signed.

Frequently asked questions

Which measurement principle should I choose?

It depends on what you are measuring. FID gives total hydrocarbon response and is the reference method for many regulatory applications. PID responds to a wide range of VOCs at low concentration and is the usual choice for leak screening and indoor air. The 3033 accepts both so one instrument covers both tasks; the 3233 adds non-contact thermal imaging for locating a leak rather than measuring it.

What sampling media do I need?

Sorbent tube sampling is standard for ambient air and requires thermal desorption analysis. Solution absorption suits high-boiling and polar compounds. Canister and bag sampling capture the full volume for subsequent laboratory analysis. The 2061 supports both sorbent tube and solution absorption; the 3036 and 3038C use canister and bag methods.

Can these instruments be used in hazardous areas?

Intrinsic safety is the relevant question. The 2026 handheld gas detector and the 3062 duct velocity monitor are designed and certified to GB 3836.1 and GB 3836.4, which align with the IECEx scheme. The 3233 gas leak thermal imager carries Ex ia IIC T4 Ga. State your certification requirement in the enquiry and we will confirm what can be provided.

What is the fence-line requirement I should design for?

Non-methane total hydrocarbon at the boundary is typically limited to a one-hour average of 4.0 mg/m³. An instrument that reports only spot readings cannot demonstrate compliance with a time-weighted limit, so specify averaging capability when you specify the instrument.
