Emission Monitoring for Cement, Lime and Steel Plants

Overview

Cement, lime and steel plants face a distinctive combination of challenge: extreme flue gas temperatures, high dust loading, sticky or oxidising species that damage sampling lines, and process emissions that vary significantly with production state. The instruments have to survive the duct and produce a result that survives the regulator.

The compliance picture

Emissions are assessed against a named method, not against a concentration in isolation. The table below lists the parameters this sector is regulated on, the methods that apply, and what each method actually determines.

Parameter Method / standard What it determines
Stack particulate matter GB/T 16157-1996 · HJ/T 48-1999 Isokinetic gravimetric; kilns and sinter plants run continuously
Process gas composition HJ 1131-2020 · HJ 1132-2020 SO₂ and NOₓ by constant-potential electrolysis
Flow and velocity determination HJ/T 47-1999 Pitot and thermal methods; velocity under 45 m/s typical
Dioxins GB 16445-2014 Co-incident with particulate sampling at cement kilns
Heavy metals HJ 25.3-2019 class Particulate and gas phase sampling for metal content
Mercury HJ 57-2017 At waste-heat kilns and sinter plants

Recommended instrument set

The following combination covers routine compliance testing, screening ahead of a full test, and the reference data a defensible submission needs. Every model is configurable at order — state your range, gas and output protocol and the configuration will be confirmed in the quotation.

Common challenges in this sector

The problems below come up repeatedly in enquiries from this sector. They are engineering constraints, not sales objections, and the right answer is to specify around them rather than discover them on site.

Sinter plant flue gas is hot enough to destroy a standard sampling line

Heat tracing and an extended-temperature probe are not optional here. The 1089A provides configurable heat tracing from 100 to 160 °C with PTFE gas paths rated to 200 °C; specify the heated option explicitly when quoting.

A kiln test that takes 2–4 hours will not stay isokinetic through a production change

Test during a steady production state and record the production rate for the period. If the process cannot be held steady, the correct approach is repeated short tests with the data averaged, not one long test — and this decision belongs to your accredited tester, not to the instrument.

Sticky or oxidising particulate blocks filters and pumps faster than in other sectors

The visible dust-filter core on the 3012 series is designed for tool-free replacement in the field specifically so a blocked filter does not end a test. Plan filter changes into the test schedule rather than treating them as failures.

Documents to have ready

Having the applicable documents in hand before the enquiry shortens the quotation cycle and avoids specifying an instrument against the wrong method. These are the references most frequently requested in this sector.
