Water Quality Monitoring

Water quality monitoring divides into laboratory determination and field sampling, and the requirements differ in kind. Laboratory analysers prioritise accuracy, reagent economy and unattended throughput. Field systems prioritise how well they survive and how little they need servicing between deployments. Specifying the wrong one is expensive either way.

What this family covers

Automatic COD and permanganate index analysers with multi-position sample carousels, portable and benchtop filtration, evaporation concentrators in 8- and 12-channel configurations, precipitation samplers with thermostatically controlled cabinets, and an autonomous surface-water monitoring vessel with an IP68 multi-parameter probe.

Applications

Surface water and drinking water networks · wastewater treatment plant influent and effluent · industrial effluent monitoring · precipitation and acid deposition sampling · groundwater monitoring · marine and coastal surveys · drinking water source protection

How to specify

Sample number per run drives the carousel size, and it is cheaper to size it correctly at order than to add a second analyser later. The 5034 handles 40 positions and runs high and low concentration samples simultaneously without cross-interference; the 5032 handles 54 positions for permanganate index. Tell us your daily sample count and the instrument will be specified to match.

Every model on this page is photographed and available. Specifications are taken from the 2025 product catalog and should still be confirmed against the factory datasheet before a contract is signed.

Frequently asked questions

CODcr or permanganate index — which should I use?

They measure different things and are not interchangeable. CODcr is the dichromate oxidation method and remains the regulatory method for most wastewater permits; it takes roughly 30 minutes and consumes significant reagent. The permanganate index oxidises more weakly but costs far less, runs much faster, and is widely used for surface water and drinking water where high COD is not expected. If your permit names a method, that method governs.

How much reagent does an automatic COD analyser consume?

Substantially less than manual analysis, because the instrument doses only what the sample requires rather than a fixed excess, and it performs the blank determination itself. Running unattended over a programme of samples is where the savings compound. Ask for the consumption figure for your own duty cycle rather than accepting a generic figure — the honest number depends on sample range and frequency.

Can these instruments run unattended outdoors?

The automatic analysers are typically installed indoors in a controlled environment where temperature and reagent storage are controllable, which is normal practice. The field-deployable systems are designed differently: the 5008B suction filter at IP56, the 5020 precipitation sampler with a thermostatically controlled cabinet, and the 5040 autonomous vessel with IP68 sensors.

What does the autonomous vessel measure?

The multi-parameter probe covers pH 0–14, dissolved oxygen (0–20) mg/L or 0–200% saturation, conductivity 1 μS/cm to 1000 mS/cm, turbidity (0.3–1000) NTU, depth to 100 m, chlorophyll 0.15–400 μg/L, UV COD (0.15–130) mg/L and ammonia nitrogen (0.5–1000) mg/L. All sensors output RS-485 Modbus at IP68, with 2 km dual-link communication and ADCP sonar for depth and velocity.
