Stack Emission Monitoring for Power Plants and Boilers
Overview
Coal, gas, biomass and waste-fired power plants are among the most stringently regulated stationary sources in almost every jurisdiction. Particulate matter, SO₂, NOₓ, CO, CO₂, Hg and — increasingly — dioxins and furans each carry their own method, limit and reporting format. No single analyser satisfies a full compliance programme, and an instrument specified without its method will not survive a regulator’s review.
The compliance picture
Emissions are assessed against a named method, not against a concentration in isolation. The table below lists the parameters this sector is regulated on, the methods that apply, and what each method actually determines.

Recommended instrument set
The following combination covers routine compliance testing, screening ahead of a full test, and the reference data a defensible submission needs. Every model is configurable at order — state your range, gas and output protocol and the configuration will be confirmed in the quotation.

Common challenges in this sector
The problems below come up repeatedly in enquiries from this sector. They are engineering constraints, not sales objections, and the right answer is to specify around them rather than discover them on site.
A sampling pump sized for a high-flow stack will not hold isokinetic velocity in a low-flow duct
Configure the pump to the stack, not the other way round. The 3012H-D at up to 100 L/min covers most power-plant ducts in a single instrument; specifying a variable-speed pump avoids carrying two units. Ask your sales representative for the flow-versus-duct-diameter guidance before ordering.
Mercury needs a different sampling train from the rest of the suite
The 3072 runs dual independent channels with a titanium front filter and PTFE secondary filter, so mercury and conventional gas species can be captured on the same run. Trying to share a single train between mercury and SO₂/NOₓ will compromise both.
Low-concentration particulate defeats a standard configuration
Below 50 mg/m³ the gravimetric result approaches the method blank. The low-concentration multi-function probe and the higher-flow configuration exist specifically for this; using a standard probe will produce a result that looks valid and is not defensible.
Documents to have ready
Having the applicable documents in hand before the enquiry shortens the quotation cycle and avoids specifying an instrument against the wrong method. These are the references most frequently requested in this sector.
